ABIGAIL, The Diplomat

Her story, found in 1 Samuel 25, highlights her as a woman of great wisdom and courage.

Abigail was the wife of Nabal, a wealthy but surly man who lived in the region of Carmel. Known for her intelligence and beauty, Abigail played a pivotal role in averting disaster. When David, who would later become king, sent men to request provisions from Nabal, citing the protection his men had provided to Nabal's shepherds, Nabal rudely rebuffed them.

Angered by this insult, David set out with his men to exact vengeance. However, one of Nabal's servants informed Abigail of the situation. Acting quickly, Abigail gathered a generous supply of food and wine and set out to meet David. She approached him with humility and respect, acknowledging her husband's folly and pleading for David's forgiveness.

Her wise and gracious words calmed David's anger, and he praised her for her discernment and for preventing unnecessary bloodshed. Abigail's intervention not only saved her household but also earned David's respect. When Nabal later died, David sent for Abigail, and she became his wife.
