MARY, The Mother of Jesus

The story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is primarily found in the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Each account offers unique details about her life and her role in the story of Jesus' birth and early years.

1. Gospel of Luke:

  - The most detailed account of Mary’s story is found in the Gospel of Luke, beginning in Luke 1:26-56. This passage includes the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel visits Mary to announce that she will conceive a child by the Holy Spirit and that this child will be the Son of God. Mary's faithful response is captured in her acceptance of God's will, famously expressed in her words, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled."

  - Following the Annunciation is Mary's visit to her relative Elizabeth (Luke 1:39-56), where Mary’s song of praise, known as the Magnificat, appears. This passage highlights Mary's humility, faith, and understanding of God's work in her life.

2. Gospel of Matthew:

  - In the Gospel of Matthew, Mary’s story is intertwined with that of Joseph. Matthew 1:18-25 provides an account of Joseph's initial reaction to Mary's miraculous pregnancy and the angelic message that reassures him of God's plan. This passage emphasizes Joseph’s role and his decision to take Mary as his wife, underscoring the theme of divine intervention and faith.

  - Matthew 2 includes the visit of the Magi and the flight into Egypt, events that further involve Mary as she and Joseph protect the young Jesus from King Herod's decree.

3. Additional References:

  - Mary is also present in other parts of the New Testament. For instance, she is mentioned in the Gospel of John at the wedding at Cana (John 2:1-12), where Jesus performs his first miracle. Mary’s presence at the crucifixion of Jesus is recorded in John 19:25-27, highlighting her enduring faith and maternal devotion.

  - In Acts 1:14, Mary is mentioned as being among the disciples after Jesus' ascension, participating in prayer and community life with the early church.
