TAMAR, the deceitful wife of Judah's sons

The story of Tamar, the wife of Judah's sons, can be found in Genesis 38. This chapter details Tamar's relationship with Judah and the events surrounding her struggles for justice and recognition within the family lineage.

In this narrative, Tamar was initially married to Er, Judah's firstborn son. After Er's death, Tamar was given to Judah's second son, Onan, in accordance with the levirate marriage custom, which required a brother to marry the widow of a deceased brother to continue the family line. However, Onan also dies, and Judah is reluctant to give Tamar to his third son, Shelah.

Feeling abandoned and determined to secure her place in Judah's family, Tamar takes matters into her own hands. Disguising herself as a prostitute, she encounters Judah, who does not recognize her. After their encounter, Tamar becomes pregnant. When Judah learns of her pregnancy, he initially demands her execution, but Tamar reveals his identity as the father by producing his personal belongings. This revelation leads to a moment of recognition and acceptance for Tamar.

Tamar's story concludes with her giving birth to twins, Perez and Zerah which not only ensured her place in the family of Judah but also established a lineage that would have far-reaching implications in biblical history. Perez was the ancestor of King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ, making Tamar an important figure in biblical genealogy.
