ZIPPORAH, The Wife of Moses
The story of Zipporah, the wife of Moses is found primarily in the Book of Exodus, which is the second book of the Bible.
Exodus 2:16-22
Exodus 4:24-26
Exodus 18:1-6
Zipporah was the daughter of Jethro, the priest of Midian, a land situated east of the Sinai Peninsula. Her narrative begins in the wilderness of Midian, where she encounters a fugitive from Egypt—Moses. After fleeing from Pharaoh’s wrath for killing an Egyptian, Moses found refuge in Midian, where he met Jethro’s daughters at a well. When shepherds attempted to drive them away, Moses intervened, showcasing his innate sense of justice and protection.
Impressed by his bravery and kindness, Jethro invited Moses to stay with his family. It was during this time that Zipporah, the eldest daughter, captured Moses’s heart. Their union was not merely one of love; it was a meeting of two worlds—Moses, an Israelite raised in the courts of Pharaoh, and Zipporah, a Midianite who embodied the customs and traditions of her people.
Moses and Zipporah married, and together they had two sons, Gershom and Eliezer. Their life in Midian was characterized by simplicity and the daily toil of shepherding. However, this tranquil existence was destined for upheaval when God called upon Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. This divine commission would not only test Moses’s resolve but also challenge the very fabric of their family life.
As Moses prepared to confront Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites, Zipporah stood at the crossroads of loyalty and duty. She was not merely a passive participant in her husband’s calling; her strength and wisdom would play a crucial role in the unfolding events.
As they traveled toward Egypt, a grave situation unfolded. The Bible recounts that as they made their way, the Lord sought to kill Moses (Exodus 4:24). This startling declaration raises many questions: Why would God threaten to kill His chosen leader? The answer lies in the covenant of circumcision, which was a critical aspect of the Israelites’ identity and their commitment to God.
Moses had neglected to circumcise his son, Gershom. This omission was not merely a personal failing; it symbolized a disregard for the covenantal relationship between God and His people.
In the face of this life-threatening situation, it was Zipporah who demonstrated remarkable courage and decisiveness. Understanding the gravity of their predicament, she quickly took action to save her husband and family. She performed the circumcision herself, using a flint knife, and applied the blood to Moses’s feet, uttering the words, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me" (Exodus 4:25). This act not only averted disaster but also highlighted her pivotal role in Moses’s mission.
